Lilly Pulitzer Dot Dot Hop Tutorial

Hey y’all! I’m back with another Lilly tutorial! My little sister asked me to help her paint a Lilly canvas for her friend, so I decided the best way to show her was to each make a canvas and work together step-by-step. So here is the canvas I ended up making for one of my best friends. Be sure to check back on Sunday to see my little sister’s!

This is the Lilly Pulitzer Dot Dot Hop pattern that inspired me!

Supplies:

  • Blank Canvas
  • Printer and Paper
  • Pencil
  • 3 Shades of Blue Acrylic Paint*
  • Turquoise Acrylic Paint*
  • White Acrylic Paint*
  • 2 Shades of Pink Acrylic Paint*
  • Various Sized Paint Brushes
  • Black Paint Pen

*You can substitute a different color to give it your own personal touch*

Step 1: Choose a quote and design the font and layout on the computer. Print it out. Make sure it is the size you want for your canvas. Then, flip over the paper and color in the back with a pencil to create your own carbon transfer.

Step 2: Place the quote on the canvas and tape into place. Then trace over the words with a pencil. You need to add a little bit of pressure to make sure it transfers, but not too hard or you will rip the paper. Once you have traced over all of it, remove the paper. Now you have the outline of your words!

Step 3: Trace over the pencil with a black paint pen. You may think this is silly to do now, since you haven’t painted the canvas, but trust me, if you don’t do it now, you won’t be able to see the pencil lines later!

Step 4: Paint over the quote. I started off with a light layer of paint, so that I could still see the words. I then went over the big, blank spaces with a second coat of paint but tried to leave the words so that I could see them.

Step 5: Now step 5 and 6 can easily be reversed, its really up to you, but I don’t like to paint a light color over a dark one so I outlined it instead. Anyways, using the turquoise paint, paint leaves and stems for the background of the design.

Step 6: As I mentioned above, Steps 5 and 6 can be reversed. Paint the rest of the background blue.

Step 7: Paint small white flowers in clusters across the canvas. You can go over the leaves as they are meant to be part of the background. Add the occasional small heart.

Step 8: Repeat Step 7 but this time with pink flowers. Don’t worry about letting some of the flowers overlap and run into each other.

Step 9: Now do the same with a light blue and dark blue. If you still have open space go back and fill in with another color.

Step 10: Using a fine paint brush add pink centers to all of the flowers.
